Work in Progress–Black Capped Chickadee in Colored Pencil

black-capped chickadee

I thought it was about time that I posted something other than a watercolor painting. I picked this project from a book that I bought way back in 1998–Painting Garden Birds with Sherry Nelson–but never used. The book offers a series of lessons in oil painting but since I no longer have any oil paints laying around the house, I gave it a try with colored pencils. Prisma Color and Verithin colored pencils on gray Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper.

Very nice job, I like how well defined this is and how the highlights make the leaves and cherries look so shiny!

A serene image. Love the colors, and the curls of the leaves.

Your attention to detail is so amazing in this and the little bird is so sweet. Can’t wait to see it finished!

Thanks, Caitie. I’m able to achieve much more detail in colored pencils than I have in watercolor.

charming, absolutely charming. That would look so cute on a tea towel hanging on the oven. Maybe waiting for oatmeal cookies to bake up.

This is absolutely gorgeous! I would never have guessed this could be done with colored pencils. I have the same pencils, but I can’t imagine doing anything like this. Beautiful.

Thank you, Tim. Drawing was my first love. I was never much interested in painting–until I started following several watercolor artists on Illustration Friday. Then I was hooked and had to try it myself. I created this blog to track my progress, but it’s grown to include all my creative endeavors. Based on the feedback to this drawing, I think I need to set aside some time now and then and create and share more colored pencil paintings, but they take so much time to create!
